The Tampa Tribe lacrosse team is approaching its fifth season. A summer and fall club lacrosse program, the Tampa Tribe started with just two teams, leaped to four teams the following year and now has seven teams including boys U11 through U19 and girls middle and high school. Offering a balanced combination of local play, comprehensive instruction at camps from the best lacrosse coaches and participation in key college recruiting tournaments for both boys and girls, the Tribe provides an opportunity for dedicated lacrosse players to hone their game all year round.

Based just north of Tampa, FL, Wesley Chapel has become a hotbed of lacrosse in the Southeast. The Tribe’s home tournaments include the DICK’S Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, the Derek Pieper Memorial Cup presented by Maverik Lacrosse, the I Lacrosse My Heart all girls charity tournament and the Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Series.

We hope this will answer many of your questions but we are sure there is more information you need.  Please feel free to contact us at the email address and phone number below.

Tampa Tribe FAQ’s

What is the WCAA?

The Wesley Chapel Athletic Association is a non-profit organization that was formed, and exists, to provide for the boys and girls of Wesley Chapel, Pasco County and surrounding areas a quality youth sports program including: soccer, flag football, cheerleading, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, softball and tackle football. We are dedicated to involving as many members of the community as possible in affiliation with nationally recognized sports programs, to develop and encourage sportsmanship among its members and players for the betterment of their physical and social well-being.

What is WCAA Lacrosse?

The WCAA Lacrosse program has many different teams encompassing ages 5 through adult.

The Warriors was our first team and is a spring lacrosse program that provides team play from grades K through 8 with other local programs.

The Tribe is our summer/fall lacrosse program that provides team play for boys & girls, youth through high school and attends local and travel tournaments.

The Chiefs is an adult (post high school) lacrosse team that plays in local and out-of-state tournaments and competes in the Florida Lacrosse League.

How does the Warriors lacrosse team differ from the Tribe?

The sport of lacrosse is still relatively new in our area of Florida, so most players have only a few years experience.  Since the Warriors’ spring lacrosse season only lasts 3-4 months, the Tribe is a perfect opportunity for players to stay conditioned and enhance their skills even further during the summer/fall.

How are the Tribe teams decided?

Boys and Girls are divided by both age and ability:

U19/Elite (HS Boys no older than 18 yrs on 12/31/10 and accomplished younger players)

U17/Rising Stars (Boys no older than 16 yrs on 12/31/10 and accomplished younger players)

U15 (Boys no older than 14 yrs on 12/31/10 and accomplished younger players)

U13 (Boys no older than 12 yrs on 12/31/10 and accomplished younger players)

U11 (Boys no older than 10 yrs on 12/31/10 and accomplished younger players)

GHS (Girls High School – rising 9th through 12th graders)

GMS (Girls Middle School – rising 5th through 8th graders)

Teams consist of anywhere from 20-30 players and are selected by coaches during initial camps and practice sessions.  If more players are available then another team of the same age will be formed – no cuts!  Once rosters are decided, players will be notified of their team assignment.

What is the Tribe “mission”?

The Tribe exists to provide a cost-effective opportunity for lacrosse players to expand their mastery of the game and to be exposed to college recruiters.  The Tribe will achieve its vision by holding regularly scheduled practices designed to provide individual skills improvement, physical fitness training and conditioning, and ‘team-concept’ lacrosse development.

WCAA Lacrosse is the host organization for the Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Tournament and the Derek Pieper Memorial Cup presented by Maverik Lacrosse, a Florida qualifier tournament for the DICK’S Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions.  The Tribe is additionally proud to host the 2012 DICK’S Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, an internationally attended tournament where many college coaches will be watching for talented prospects.  Our goal throughout the season is to provide our high school players the best opportunity possible to be successful on the national stage that the DSG TOC will provide.

Who are the Tribe coaches?

All of our head coaches have experience coaching youth, middle school, high school and/or college lacrosse squads.  We also are always recruiting volunteer assistant coaches.  The coaches will apply their on-field and sidelines experience to provide an enriching learning experience for all players.  It is important to our program that all players receive the best coaching available.

What are my fees going towards?

The WCAA is a 503c non-profit organization.

Each player will receive a pair of uniform shorts, a uniform jersey, a shooter shirt, and a set of helmet stickers.  The registration fees also go towards the other miscellaneous costs to run the program including insurance, balls, goals, cones, maintenance, first aid kits, electricity for lights, etc.  We work hard to keep these costs as low as possible for our eight month schedule.

For optional tournaments, there is a separate fee for each event we attend.  Fees will vary from event to event and go towards the registration cost to attend and to cover the coaches travel expenses and stipends.  Many of our coaches are volunteers and do not receive any payment for participating in our program.  Some of the coaches are paid a stipend for their participation and the Tribe administration carefully assesses the benefits to our players before entering into such an agreement.

Are there fees for EVERY tournament we attend?

Our year is split as a Summer season and a Fall season which is explained on the Schedule and Fees page.  The registration fee for each season covers fees for all scheduled tournaments and events for that season.  For Optional Tournaments, yes there will be additional fees and they are also listed on the Schedule and Fees page.  As other opportunities are available for the Tribe, we will inform our parents.

What are my travel responsibilities?

All players and families are responsible for paying for their own meals, lodging, travel, and any other associated costs related to attending the tournaments.

What are my supervision responsibilities?

Including practices, games and tournaments, parents/guardians are responsible for getting their players to and picking up their players from all designated meeting areas on time.  Coaches will be responsible for relaying this information to the parents.  Once the players are released by the coaches from the fields, players are then under the responsibility of their parents/guardians.

Are there fundraising opportunities?

YES!  The Tampa Tribe has team-based fundraising opportunities to help defer costs of tournament fees.  Information about these opportunities will be shared through your coaches and via email and our website.

Of course, any fundraising opportunities that interest the families of the Tampa Tribe will be considered provided that the necessary number of volunteers are available.  For more information about fundraising and sponsorship opportunities, please see the Director of Lacrosse.

What are the equipment requirements?

We strive to be cost-effective for our families, so we do not require that new equipment be purchased.  We do recommend that all our players have a white helmet (preferably with white trim) and Carolina or Navy Blue/White gloves.  We will make arrangements for interested families to special order helmets and gloves in Tampa Tribe colors.

How is information shared with the families and players?

Our three main sources of communications are email, our website and Twitter.

             Email

Your email addresses will be assigned to a general Tampa Tribe google group and to a team specific google group.  Both Tribe administration and coaches will be sending you emails regularly so be sure to check your email often.

            www.TampaTribe.org

Our website has both team specific pages and a general home page each with an up-to-date info section.  It’s a good idea to check the web for questions about same-day issues or changes.  This is also where tourney info, schedules and forms are found.

            Twitter

Our Twitter id is:  TampaTribe  Please begin to follow us asap.  Also, it is highly recommended that you link your cell phone to our tweets so you get up-to-date info texted directly to your cell.  We will also use Twitter to directly update our website with info, so you will get the info first if you are following us.  Easy to follow instructions are on our website www.TampaTribe.org

How often are there changes to the practice and tournament schedule?

Not often, but we will be sure to contact all players by email, Twitter and update our website when schedule changes are necessary.  Any weather related changes will be posted as soon as possible, if time will allow.

What is my expected level of commitment to the Tampa Tribe?

-- Players are expected to attend all practices and all season games/tournaments.

All events and tournaments on the Summer or Fall schedule will be mandatory.  Certain tournaments and events will be offered as an opportunity to the team and the Tribe will go only if enough players commit.  Please see the Schedule and Fees for more details.

We are reasonable and we do also have families.  If you know you cannot attend a tournament or event due to a previously scheduled engagement, please keep in touch with your Coach.

We expect that when you register with the Tampa Tribe, that the Tribe is your primary off-season team from May until January.  We will never dissuade a player from taking advantage of an opportunity, but we do expect that the said opportunity will not interfere with our practice and tournament schedule, especially those tournaments sponsored by the WCAA.  Be sure to clear any non-Tribe participation with both your Coach and Tribe administration.  Playing for another team at an event the Tribe is attending or failing to clear non-Tribe participation with another program is grounds for dismissal with no refund.

What is my expected level of practice commitment?

-- Players are expected to attend all practices and all season games/tournaments.

Prior to tournaments you can expect more practice sessions.  We recognize that some of our families travel great distances to participate in our program and that you will not be able to attend some practices.  We simply ask you to keep an open line of communication so we can make necessary adjustments.  Remember that proper attire is required at all practices.

We expect each player to improve during their personal time by practicing their stick skills via wall ball, scooping/cradling drills, and/or passing/catching with a friend.  We also expect players to stay conditioned through agility exercises and running during their personal time.

Is there a refund policy?

There are no refunds for monies paid to the WCAA Lacrosse Program.  Many of the tournaments we attend or companies that we do business with require payment months in advance and it is RARE that a refund is available from those organizations.  Any refund request must be submitted in writing to the Director of Lacrosse for consideration.

Is there a policy for dismissal of a player?

Players that are caught breaking rules that become a safety or discipline problem at any WCAA Lacrosse function or at any game/tournament we attend or that break the WCAA Tampa Tribe Code of Conduct will be asked to leave at their parents’ expense.  Said player will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including game suspension and/or dismissal from the team.  Any such behavior should be immediately reported to the team coach or the Director of Lacrosse.
