9-11 Anniversary at Ground Zero

As many of you who have been around the program for a while know, Coach FitzSimons lost his Uncle and Godfather, Richard P. FitzSimons, on that fateful day 10 years ago. Uncle Rich was a big reason why Coach Fitz started lacrosse in the Wesley Chapel area and the other WCAA programs and he continues to be an inspiration to him to this very day. Attached are pictures of the memorial site, some names of lacrosse players lost and of the new Liberty Tower being built. It the first time Coach Fitz has returned to the site since November 2001.

As they stand beside Richard P. FitzSimons' name etched on the memorial parapet surrounding the footprint of the South Tower.

  • The New North Tower

With Flag flowing in the breeze.
  • Uncle Rich

Listed to the left of his name, is his partner on the job as Fire Safety Warden at the Towers. William Wren. They were neighbors and friends for over 25 years, and lost their lives side by side on 9-11-01
  • The South Tower Memorial Pool

This is where my uncle and the rest of the first responders are listed. Only ten years ago the South Tower stood in the expanse of ground. 110 stories of building once occupied this space and now this magnificent monument will stand to honor those lost on that day.
  • Uncle Rich and others list on a Flag just off the site.

Like so many others who died that day, he did so with dignity and with caring for others not himself. He saved many people that day.
  • A True Lacrosse Legend

When Coach Fitz was growing up on Long Island this man was the Gary Gait and Casey Powel of our day.
  • John T. Schroeder

Played for Princeton in the early 90's and was a teammate of mine for four years in Club ball. Great guy, great player, big laugh.
